Northern Europe Based Client - Case Study

Overview

Marcus is an American ex-pat working for a large US-based company in Amsterdam. After graduating from college he joined a blue-chip global company that had a leadership development plan for him with 3-year placements in Tokyo, Singapore, and London before relocating him back to the US. While in London, he got offered to head up the EMEA-division for another American company based in Amsterdam. The offer included stock-options and a generous relocation package and a joining bonus that enabled him to buy a luxury condo in Amsterdam. Marcus does not know if or when he will return to the US but needed someone that can advise him on when and how to most efficiently exercise his options, manage his rollover IRA and advise him on retirement plans, including social security from several countries.

The Problem

Marcus is an American ex-pat, currently living in Amsterdam, who was identified as a top leadership prospect early in his career. He has lived and worked in multiple countries around the world, and has accumulated property and investments in multiple countries. Marcus does not know if or when he will return to the US, but he needs sound advice to help him with his global investments and retirement plans.

The Challenge

Right out of college, Marcus joined a blue-chip global company that had a leadership development plan for him with 3-year placements in Tokyo, Singapore, and London before relocating him back to the US. While in London, the Amsterdam office of another American company offered him the opportunity to lead their EMEA division. This offer included stock options, a generous relocation package, and a signing bonus that enabled him to buy a luxury condominium in Amsterdam. Marcus is not certain where he will end up at the end of his career, but he needs to be prepared for retirement wherever it makes the most sense at the time. He needs help with how to efficiently exercise his stock options, manage his rollover IRA, and plan for a retirement that will include multiple income streams, including social security from several different countries.

The Goal

Marcus wants help exercising his stock options and managing his retirement assets intelligently, and he wants to have a solid financial plan that gives him the flexibility to retire anywhere in the world.
